ATV or buggy: how to choose your tour in the Bay of Kotor

Drive a quad yourself, or sit back in a buggy while our driver handles the trail? Here is how the two compare.

An Aodes quad parked above the Bay of Kotor

Every tour we run is either by quad (ATV) or by buggy, and some routes offer both. The choice changes more than the vehicle: it decides who drives, whether you need a licence, and whether you ride with other guests. This guide walks through the differences so you can pick the right one before you send an inquiry.

The short answer

  • Choose a quad if you want to drive yourself, you are 18 or older and you hold a valid category T driving licence (included with a category B car licence).
  • Choose the buggy if you would rather enjoy the views than the driving, if you want your group in one vehicle, or if nobody in your group has the licence.

Driving a quad: what it is like

Our quads are the Aodes 525 Lux and the Aodes 650, with 525cc and 650cc engines. They have easy controls, a basket for up to 30 kg, and room for two people, so a passenger can ride behind the driver. You ride in a line behind our guide, who sets the route and the pace and stops at the viewpoints.

Before the start, everyone gets a helmet, protective gear and instructions. To drive, you need:

  • to be at least 18 years old,
  • a valid category T driving licence (included with a category B car licence),
  • a valid ID card or passport.

Category T comes automatically with a category B (car) licence, so most guests with a normal car licence can drive. If you do not have one, the buggy is the way to go. Children aged 4 and over can ride as passengers; we supply kid-size helmets.

Riding in the buggy

Our buggy is the CFMOTO U1000 XL, a 1000cc side-by-side vehicle with a safety cage (ROPS) and five seats. It is always driven by our professional driver. Nobody in your group needs a licence, and you can talk, take photos and look around the whole time, which makes it a good fit for families, friends who want to stay together and anyone who has never driven off-road.

A buggy tour is always private: only your group, at the time you choose.

Group or private?

On a group tour you join other guests at a set time. Group tours run by quad on three routes: Vrmac – Saint Ilija, Luštica and Vrmac Night. On a private tour you have a guide or driver only for your group, nobody else joins your tour, and you choose the time. Every other tour is private, and so is every buggy tour.

Private does not mean the trails are closed to everyone else: other people who are not part of your tour, such as other tours, companies or independent explorers, may be at the same places.

Three common situations

"Two of us, one has the licence." Take one quad: the licence holder drives and the other rides as a passenger. On Vrmac – Saint Ilija and Luštica you can join a group or go private.

"A family or a group of friends who want to stay together." The buggy keeps everyone in one vehicle and nobody has to drive. Vrmac – Saint Ilija by buggy comes with a picnic; Gornji Stoliv is a quieter route through olive groves to an old stone village.

"Just the two of us, something special." Vrmac Romantic Buggy is a private buggy ride for two to the viewpoints of Vrmac. If you would rather drive yourselves in the evening, Vrmac Night is a group tour by quad.
