ATV tour in Montenegro: what to know before you ride

Licence, age, clothing, weather and booking: everything to check before your quad tour in the Bay of Kotor.

Quads lined up on a forest road on Vrmac, ready for the ride

A quad tour is one of the easiest ways to get off the coast road and up into the hills around the Bay of Kotor. A little preparation makes the day much better. Here is what to check before you book and what to bring on the day.

1. Who can drive

To drive a quad (ATV) on our tours you need:

  • to be at least 18 years old,
  • a valid category T driving licence (included with a category B car licence), which you bring with you,
  • a valid ID card or passport.

Category T comes automatically with a category B (car) licence, so most guests with a normal car licence can drive. If you do not have one, you can still come along as a passenger on a quad driven by someone who meets the requirements, or choose a buggy tour, where our professional driver drives. Read ATV or buggy: how to choose for the details.

Children aged 4 and over are welcome as passengers, and we supply kid-size helmets.

2. What we provide

  • A helmet and protective gear for every rider, including kid-size helmets for children
  • Instructions before the ride, so you know the controls and the rules of the trail
  • An experienced guide who leads the group and sets the pace, or our professional driver in the buggy

Our quads, the Aodes 525 Lux and Aodes 650, have easy controls and room for two people.

3. What to wear

  • Closed shoes such as trainers or hiking shoes. No flip-flops.
  • Long trousers or at least clothes you do not mind getting dusty. Gravel tracks in summer are dusty.
  • Sunglasses, which also keep dust out of your eyes.
  • A light layer for the evening: on Vrmac Night the ridge can be cooler than the coast.

4. What to bring

  • Water, especially from June to September
  • Sunscreen
  • Your driving licence and ID or passport
  • A phone or camera for the viewpoints, kept in a zipped pocket or a small bag while you ride

5. Weather and season

Summers in the Bay of Kotor are hot, so morning and late-afternoon tours are the most comfortable, and the forest sections on Vrmac give some shade. Spring and autumn are mild and often the most pleasant time to ride. Our tours take place outdoors; if the weather or the trail conditions make a tour unsafe, we contact you about the options.

6. On the trail

  • Keep your helmet on for the whole ride.
  • Stay behind the guide and keep a safe distance from the quad in front.
  • Ride at the pace the guide sets, especially on gravel and on bends.
  • Never drive after drinking alcohol.

Our full rules are in the Terms & Conditions.

7. How booking works

Send us an inquiry with the tour, your preferred date and the number of people. We reply with availability and a personal quote. Decide between a group tour (you join other guests at a set time; by quad on Vrmac – Saint Ilija, Luštica and Vrmac Night) and a private tour (only your group, at the time you choose). Buggy tours are always private.
